The “Amazon Amendment” Would Effectively Hand Government Purchasing Power Over to Amazon
A small provision buried in the National Defense Authorization Act could mean even bigger profits for Amazon at the expense of taxpayers. The amendment would allow the Department of Defense to purchase office supplies and other goods through an "online marketplace." As the law is written, Amazon and Walmart would be the only retailers able to meet the government's requirements. How much do these companies stand to profit? Last year, the Department of Defense spent $53 billion on commercial products.
These are exactly the kind of deals that fuel a vicious of cycle of wealth and political power. Corporations use their wealth to influence the political system, which leads to laws and special provisions that tilt the economy further in favor of those at the top. It is a downward spiral that squeezes out of the interests of the American people and imperils our democracy. We must work to restore a system that works for the many, not the few.
