U.S. government shutdown entering fifth week:

U.S. government shutdown entering fifth week
President Trump, faced with increasing backlash over the longest shutdown in U.S. history, made an offer over the weekend: temporary protections for roughly 700,000 young undocumented immigrants, known as “Dreamers,” in exchange for $5.7 billion in funding for his border wall.
Democrats called it “hostage taking” and refused to negotiate until the government reopens.
Some of the 800,000 furloughed federal employees are turning to pawnshops and brokers for short-term loans.
Go deeper: People who have done business with Mr. Trump over the years say his uncompromising fixation on a southern border wall is consistent with the negotiating tactics he used for decades in the private sector, focused foremost on claiming victory.

Perils mount for the Trump presidency.
The shift of power in Congress and news reports are combining to confront President Trump with the prospect of a protracted and intense political war for survival “that may make the still-unresolved partial government shutdown pale by comparison,” writes our chief White House correspondent.

government shutdown. Rhetoric, disputes persist in country's longest-ever shutdown

President Trump continued to blame Democrats for a “massive humanitarian crisis” at the border and Democrats remained opposed to the idea that a wall is needed.

Networks giving Trump free airtime on Tuesday

"How should a uniquely deceptive president be treated by TV networks that value the truth?" asks Brian Stelter

Trump's border address sparks extraordinary debate inside and outside TV networks

The major television networks have decided to air Donald Trump's latest reality TV spectacle, a prime time address to the nation from the Oval Office on immigration. It will be nothing more than an opportunity for him to spout more lies. In 2014, the networks refused to air President Obama's address on immigration because they claimed it was "overtly political," yet even though Trump has built an entire political propaganda campaign about the wall in rallies, campaign ads, and embroidered hats, they're willing to air his address because he has intimidated them.
My Advice for networks tonight during Trump's lie-a-thon would be to use time delay so you can check facts and mark his lies with cartoon Pinocchio head pop-up each time he tells a whopper. Your thoughts?
