It is a sad day for America. Once again, Mitch McConnell and Republican Senators put party over country, voting to acquit Donald Trump in his impeachment trial. It was a shameful display of partisanship in the aftermath of one of the worst attacks on our democracy since our nation's founding. Donald Trump fomented the violence that desecrated the halls of Congress, injured dozens, and resulted in the tragic death of five Americans.
The vote today will only encourage more attacks and incitement to violence in years to come. Shame on all of those who voted to let Trump off the hook.
Their cowardice and hypocrisy is unparalleled.

Tucked inside the Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996 is one of the most valuable tools for protecting freedom of expression and innovation on the Internet: Section 230.
This comes somewhat as a surprise, since the original purpose of the legislation was to restrict free speech on the Internet. The Internet community as a whole objected strongly to the Communications Decency Act, and with EFF's help, the anti-free speech provisions were struck down by the Supreme Court. But thankfully, CDA 230 remains and in the years since has far outshone the rest of the law.
Section 230 says that "No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider" (47 U.S.C. § 230). In other words, online intermediaries that host or republish speech are protected against a range of laws that might otherwise be used to hold them legally responsible for what others say and do. The protected intermediaries include not only regular Internet Service Providers (ISPs), but also a range of "interactive computer service providers," including basically any online service that publishes third-party content. Though there are important exceptions for certain criminal and intellectual property-based claims, CDA 230 creates a broad protection that has allowed innovation and free speech online to flourish.

40 percent of U.S. COVID deaths could have been averted if it weren't for Trump: Report
A new report from The Lancet — one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious medical journals — finds that 40 percent of the United States’ COVID deaths could have been averted. The report notes that even before the pandemic, the U.S. had a much higher mortality rate than other wealthy peer nations, such as those in the G7. If the U.S. had a preexisting death rate comparable to these other nations and Trump hadn’t “publicly dismissed its threat…discouraged action as infection spread, and eschewed international cooperation” throughout the pandemic, then the U.S. would have seen 40 percent fewer deaths last year.
Of course, Trump is not responsible for the country’s already high mortality rate. The report notes that factors like climate change, deregulation, egregious health care costs, lack of health insurance, economic inequality, and systemic racism all contribute to the United States’ higher mortality rate — factors that have been worsening for decades under both Republican and Democratic leaders. It’s not enough to address the health and economic problems wrought by the pandemic. We need a systemic overhaul.
