This made our day. (Thanks to your mom, too.)
In the mid 1960's, my mother left a low paying job at a West Oakland doctor's office and took a job at the Sunshine Biscuits factory. She would continue to work there until the 1970's, when she was able to start the civil service and public utilities segment of her working career.
She had not previously done blue collar work in this country, and it often required working swing or graveyard shifts. She didn't know how long she would stay at Sunshine, but was grateful for the opportunity to earn a living wage.
When she started, she had no idea that Sunshine Biscuits was one of several companies that sponsored National Merit Scholarships every year, which provided for four years of college expenses. She had no idea that her son would apply for that scholarship in 1969, and that this kid from Oaktown would win it.
My mom's step of faith paved my way to a degree from U.C. Berkeley. Thanks again, Sunshine Biscuits, but, most of all, thanks, Mom.
