Trump has a 60-year lease with the General Services Administration for the property that’s now the Trump International Hotel. The contract between the GSA and Trump clearly and unambiguously states that no elected federal official “shall be admitted to any share or part of this lease, or to any benefit that may arise therefrom.” That clause was put into the contract to prevent corruption and self-dealing by government officials.
For the past 12 days, Trump has been raking in 87 percent of the hotel’s profits. His children are splitting the rest.
The GSA is obligated to cancel the lease, or require it be sold to another hotel operator. But the GSA hasn’t taken any action. Its head is now a Trump appointee named Tim Horne, who reports to Trump.
Trump’s lawyers (that is, lawyers for Trump the businessman, not Trump the president) contend that because Trump was not an elected official when the lease was signed, he hasn’t broken it.
What?
This is what we get when we have a president who refuses to separate his own personal streams of income from his duties as president.
There should be no confirmation of any of Trump's Supreme Court picks until the public has confidence in the legitimacy and integrity of the Trump presidency. We’re far away from that point.
What do you think?
